The Super Bowl is synonymous with winners and losers – within the game itself or across multimillion dollar advertising budgets.

The Halftime is a massive part of the overall Super Bowl experience and the instigator of much conversation in social media.
That is why we decided to take a closer look at Who Wins The Super Bowl Halftime in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

NetBase analyzed 14 Million social posts against the performances of Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry to reveal who America crowned as the Super Bowl Halftime winner from the past three years.

We looked at three dimensions to find America’s overall favorite:

  • ‘Cannot wait’ score
  • ‘Killed it’ score
  • Passion score

Who did we anticipate the most? Here we looked for conversation about not being able to wait for the halftime show performance as an indicator of anticipation. And this is how they stacked up:


Beyoncé – 16k, Bruno Mars – 8k, Katy Perry 11k.
Both Beyoncé and Katy Perry built on these numbers in terms of people claiming to watch them, but Bruno Mars saw his tally drop.

Who do we think killed it on the day? Here we looked for conversation during and after the show ended, for expressions of ‘killed it’ as an indication of who delivered a successful performance. This is how they stacked up.

Who ultimately won our hearts? Here we analyzed strong emotions expressed in social, such as: love, adore, hashtags (e.g. #luv), and crave.

America liked the last three years’ performers in general – they entertained us.
But, Passion only has one Super Bowl winner and the scores are in – Katy Perry 35, Bruno Mars 75, and Beyoncé 84.

In addition, Beyoncé generated nearly two times the amount of social chatter in 2013 with more than 7 million overall mentions, compared to 3.8M from Katy Perry and 2.1M with Bruno Mars.
And this despite the social world growing rapidly in the past two years with circa 0.5B new social users being added to social.
